COUNSELLING In Northaw, Potters Bar

Person-Centred Therapy

Person-Centred Therapy offers a powerful pathway to self-discovery and emotional healing, where you feel valued, understood, and free to explore your inner world to move towards a more fulfilling life, achieve personal growth and lasting change.

How I Work

The person-centred approach in counselling is based on the belief in each person's capacity to find their own answers to life's problems and ways to cope with life experiences. A key idea is that this natural human potential can be facilitated and encouraged by the unique, trusting relationship between you, the client and me, as a therapist. It is a client-led, non-judgmental approach that gives you control over what is discussed in therapy.

My Approach

I offer support, guidance and structure so that you can discover within yourself your solutions to any personal issues. During our sessions, you can express yourself in any way you choose. Person-centred therapy believes answers to your questions lie within you. A person-centred approach allows you the freedom to talk openly about anything in a safe, non-judgmental environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose a therapist?

Research shows that one of the most important aspects of effective therapy is the relationship you form with your therapist. So, finding someone who works well for you is key.  Looking up therapists who are registered members of professional bodies, such as UKCP, BACP, and NCPS, is a great start. I offer a FREE 20-minute informal consultation, where I can talk you through my therapeutic approach and what brings you to counselling. Together, we can decide if we are a good fit.

Who would person-centred counselling suit?

Person-centred counselling is better suited to clients who like the freedom to talk about their problems in a supportive and facilitative environment rather than those who prefer a more directive, structured approach with specific techniques to follow.

What issues/problems can be helped by counselling?

Client, or person-centred counselling is commonly used to treat various issues which include relationship problems, depression, anxiety, bereavement, sexuality, anger and transitions in life. It is ideal for individuals who are motivated to find out more about themselves and work towards solving their issues.

How many sessions of counselling will I need?

The number of sessions you require will be discussed at your initial session. When using a person-centred approach, the number of sessions can vary as it depends on the needs of each person.

What issues do you help with?

ADD / ADHD, Anger management, Anxiety, Autism spectrum, Bereavement, Child-related issues, Depression, Health-related issues, Loss, Neurodiversity, Relationships, Self-esteem, Self-harm, Stress, Women's issues, Work-related issues, Family issues.

Do you offer online counselling?

Yes, I do. If you are unable to meet face-to-face at my private practice in Northaw, Potters Bar or if you prefer the convenience and comfort of undergoing counselling in your home, I work with clients over the secure video platform Zoom.

How does online counselling work?

I will email you a Zoom link the day before your appointment is due to start. Just click on the link to give you access to our private counselling session. I usually ask clients to find a quiet, peaceful space where they can feel comfortable talking without being disturbed.

What happens in the first therapy session?

The first therapy session is more of a detailed assessment – an introduction to the process, where we begin to build a therapeutic relationship. I will ask questions to better understand the issues you want to address in therapy and how this is affecting your life day-to-day, as well as any important background information. You do not need to prepare anything specific, but it can be helpful if you have a think about your goals for therapy and how you’d like things to be different, so I can help you overcome the challenges you are facing.
